Just posted a few pictures from the Induction Brunch on 'Look at Us Now'!
The Hall of Fame was the ('brain-child) of Steve Tarde, who wouldn't let his dream die. After more than 2 years of, (sometimes not such gentle), prodding by Steve, Dr. Tom Shea, Superintendent of the SHSD, finally got the idea approved by the Board of Education.
With Steve living in California, he nominated Harry Waller & I to the HOF committee. After 2 years on the committee, Harry and I helped to see Steve's dream realized and, in doing so, became part of the SHSD and WWHS history!
I don't usually speak for others, but I hope Harry won't mind if I do now, and perhaps he'll add his own words to mine.
We were both privileged and honored to be a part of such an awesome experience! To listen to the many inspiring words from the inductees and to see how deeply touched they were to be honored by their former Alma Mater, and knowing I played a small part in that, at times, brought tears to my eyes. Sitting out in the middle of the WWHS football field during the actual induction and hearing the 'Voices of WWHS sing our Alma Mater really just blew me away and brought me back to a time 40 years ago....yeah....tears and all....
For me, it was one of those experiences in life when you feel you received more than you gave.
And so, I thank Harry for the pleasure of working with him; I look forward to more committee work/fun with him.
To Steve, thank you for nominating me to the HOF Committee and your vote of confidence in me! It was alot of fun being your 'eyes & ears'!!
Lorraine...You are so special to me and what a great writer. How about working with me? Oh, that's right, you already are. While I am traveling in Hawaii (I know stop complaining), your touching words and insights were revealed to me on Smitty's site.
I will always hold close to my heart what you and Harry did to make the Hall of Fame happen. Now, the job in promoting it has really just begun. I was dismayed that many in our class at the reunion had no idea what the purpose or nomination process was to enter the Hall. We have many potential members in our class, but none will get nominated unless they contact the district by going to the website you refer to and nominate a class member of ours or any of Whitman's classes.
Finally, a word to Smitty. Why not contact the didtrict and build them a website for the Hall? They need it. Tell Jacqui Harris (Ass't Supt. I said so)!
And by the way, my remarks to the initial class of the South Huntington Hall of Fame are on my blog dated September 20, 2008.
