Hi, Since Vaughn Olson posted his kindergarten photo and Brenda Moore put up Mr. Delacarpini's 3rd grade class photo, I'm thinking of Birchwood days. Anyone in contact with Chris Baggan, Mark Cushman, Lorraine Klatt, Paul Robbins, Sharon Levine, Larry Lesne or anyone else from Birchwood? Please let me know... Thanks, Kim
After Kindergarten my parents enrolled me in St Hugh's - but I recall the
Kindergarten teacher's name - Mrs. Taylor - were you in the same class as me?
No, I moved to 'County Village' (across from St. Elizabeth's) in 1959 in time for 4th grade, Mr. Thompson's class. Did go to St. Hugh's on Saturday mornings for 'religious instruction' of which I remember little religion and less instruction. But I did meet Richard Heilig there who was to become my husband 10 years later. Looking back, that 10 year period seemed soooooo long; now the 10 year periods seem to fly by.
Hi Guys,
I remember Mr Thompson's class Kim. We were all so young then. Its funny I can remember any of it now. Chris Baggan and I got together after graduation. She was working in NY City at the time and living in Huntington. I lost track of her when I left for Vietnam.
Good luck in your search.
Geb
Hi Geb, Oh yes, Mr. Thompson's class! So good to hear from you. Did you live near Chris Baggan and Lorraine Klatz... I forget. I picture you as you were in High School... Hope to see you at the reunion! I see Larry Cohen from time to time... He comes over to see my brother.... Happy holidays, Kim

Hi Kim,
I lived not very far away from Lorraine and Chris. I was on the other side of Wolf Road in a developement behind St Elizabeth's Church, yet within walking distance to Birchwood. In fact my developement had a walkway through the fence to Birchwood. Tell Larry I said hello when you see him. We were in the same elemenatry classes as well, Dale Kreger, Larry and I used to pal around in those days. The picture I posted of 'then' was taken in 1970. I don't have any pictures of my school years. They were all with my parents who have long since past away and my sister never saved any of that 'stuff' as she put it! Happy Holidays to you as well, see you at the reunion.

Well, as an loyal Birchwood fan, I have to jump in and say hi to you, Geb and say that I actually have
idealized those days! Kimberley and I have spoken about those days of innocence and the wonderful people we grew to know so well. I was tickled to see my 4th grade class photo submitted by Brenda . I also, have no school pictures so I hope to ask her for a copy. I have fond memories of my teachers, Mr. Delli Carpini and Mr. McMahon, but my memories (and I confirmed this with RIcky Schoenfeld) of Mrs. Wexler were none too sweet! Yet, we all took what we got and managed quite well. I look forward to seeing you and all our alumni from Wolf Hill Road. xxoo Chris

HI CHRISTI !
It is really great to hear from you and think back to the days of our youth and the freedoms we had, freedoms that our grandchildren will never know. Looking forward to seeing everyone in 2008

Know all those guys. My Birchwood teachers were Hanlon, Dellacarpini, Edwards, Wexler and McMahon. Tim Johnson was the otehr half of my comedy team. Does anyone remember the 1962 trip to Washington DC that cost us $39 each?
And where is Andy Egol? He was at the 35th. Anyone heard from him recently? Kim, Try this email address for Andy. Looks like he plans on attending in Sept

Gerry Simowitz lived off Wolf Hill Road, at least in the latter 60's. We made a trip into Queens to get a deal on wetsuits in '67. Did he go to Birchwood? And has anyone been in touch with him?
Hi all
Having recalled my early days selling doughnuts at a great profit at Birchwood and receiving Citizen of the Year in 6th grade, everything was downhill since then!
Seriously tho, life has been great and I fondly recall those days.
Here's Andy Egol's email: andyegol@aol.com

I was in Ms. Edward's 3rd grade class. Anyone have that picture. I was also in Mr. Predmore's 4th grade class. Does anyone have that picture they can post.
Kim, I was in Birchwood. I see Gary Moore all the time. I am also in contact with Cynthia Foulke, she went to Maplewood. Martha Plummer Parker is still in Huntington. I talk to her all the time. Were we in the same class?

I have added pictures of the districts schools, including Birchwood. Now used as a Grades 3-5 school, it's still in use! I remember going to Kindergarten at that school, then moving on to the Depot Rd First Grade school. I KNOW some of you may remember that one! Anyway, if you go to Photo Galleries, then scroll down to 'South Huntington Schools- Buildings' gallery you will see updated photos of the schools the district has today. Hope all you Birchwooders will enjoy seeing where it all started.
Smitty, last night I ran across my kindergarten report card - what a hoot - and I had posted earlier that my teacher's name was Mrs Taylor, which is wrong.
My report card was signed by Adelaide Hubert - does her name ring a bell to
anyone here?
I too have fond memories of Birchwood.I have some class pictures, somewhere.
K-6th. Does anyone remember Miss Paksey -K and Miss Torpy - 5th.?
Great class in Mr. DelaCarpini's. How about the musical we put on? I think it was The Best of Broadway? We were Fabulas.
Ciao,
Rosie
Hi Rose Marie,
I remember you well! I also remember the Best Of Broadway! What a great thing to do in 4th grade. Whenever I hear, 'I'm Gonna Wash that Man Right Outta My Hair' I think of that show. Thanks for remembering too! Look forward to seeing you at the reunion! Chris

Hi all you Birchwooders,
Checked out the picture. I looked pretty scarey back then. Loved Mr. Delacarpini but have bitter memories of Ms. Torpey. Just telling my friends about a month ago how she put me over her knee in front of the class to get me to quiet down. As a teacher, nowadays, I would probably be fired! Hi Kim - Remember me -- I'm Larry Cohen's cousin. Just saw him last Friday. Unfortunately his dad, my uncle passed away.
Hey, Kim. I rememeber you well from Birchwood. You were always popular and so nice. I was ateacher for 8 years on Long Island. I moved to Seneca, SC. where I remarried and own a fine diningrestaurant with my husband Henry. We have two children Henry, 24, and Kristen, 23. Believe it or not I still stay in contact with Ed Thompson, our fourth grade teacher who we all loved. Remember his wooden helping hand he used for discipline. Recently, Sue Kolczynski, came to visit us with her new husband, Joe. would love to hear from you. Lorraine (Lori)
I remember Birchwood very well, esp. Mr. Thompson's hand shaped paddle! I think i won an award in his class for best posture! And Mrs. Wexler, i remember the class trip to her husband's deli type store--to learn how to count change! and Miss Hoffman--i had the biggest crush on her so i always acted up in class just to get her attention--i also remember riding my bike by her house so i could hopefully see her--nowadays, that would probably be called stalking!! I have a bowling trophy from the 6th grade my team was the 6th grade champs in 1962--I have numerous report cards from Birchwood--Wow the memories this website is bringing back--
Hi Kim and everyone else from Birchwood. I remember so many of you so well! I was in Mr. T's class as well, but had forgotten all about the helping hand. I moved out of Huntington when I got married, but moved back when my boys turned five, so they could go to schools there instesad of in Glen Cove. So can you beleive they both went to Birchwood, too, and graduated from Whitman in 2003! And hello to all my old 'Knickerbocker Knolls' friends, too.(Dale,Andy,Sharon,Susie,Robert,Alan,Steve,Karen,etc.)
You went to St. Hugh's after kindergarten?
So did I.
First thru fourth grades.
I had Sister James, I think, for 1st...and maybe someone called Sister Maria Hostia for 2nd.
Some interesting memories there...
I had 'lay' teachers for 3rd and fourth. Mrs. Largaquist (sp?) for 3rd and Mrs. Donnegan, I think--- not a good one--- for fourth. Then I went on to Beverly Hills.
As kindergartener I was at 3 different schools, as many of us were moved around while schools were being built for us all.
I was at Birchwood, Oakwood and Maplewood.
