I spoke to Ed Thompson this past week and told him about this wonderful
site. He was kind enough to write on our message board. I am sure he would
love to hear from all of you. I remember the time we were talking incessantly
loud in our lines outside of the classroom. Mr. Thompson was so angry we were
all given the job of writing the times tables ten times each. From then on, I
think we all knew our times tables really well. It has been over 27 years since
I have visited the area, so I am looking forward to seeing you all again and
visit all the familiar places.
Mr. Ed Thompson was one of the best teachers we had at Birchwood. He was
kind, caring and considerate. BUT, during the 'olden days' teachers were
allowed to put you over their knee and spank. Mr. Thompson had a a wooden
paddle in the shape of a hand and an arm and readily had it available if needed.
Just the thought of the helping hand made us behavior. But I have to say there
were a few times, we had to stand in the hallway, while one of our friends
was getting a lesson from the helping hand. Hope this explains the dreaded
helping hand.
