I was reading Bill Axness's post about the Depot Road schoolhouse.......Does anyone remember the little red schoolhouse on Jericho Turnpike (i think approximately accross from WWHS).

Am i suffering from delusions, or does anyone else remember that?  I seem to remember separate doors for boys and girls......  I know it was torn down ages ago......... KT were you there? i think so!

I thought I'd posted this yesterday, but my computer burped, and BLEEP, it was gone.  Paige, I remember the class photo they took at the Little Red Schoolhouse (wasn't it called West Hills or something?!?) - you purloined a big honkin' pair of white earrings from your mother to wear in the picture!!!  I would give my right arm to see that photo again.  Oddly, I remember it pretty clearly - mostly your cute little smilin' face with those big earrings on either side!  I remember the playground equipment there.  It was totally HEAVY METAL, steel, like they make battleships out of.  I remember sliding down that ten-mile long slide - you BLASTED OFF from the base of it once you were down, and that kind of propelled you forward at warp speed, so you could run down any little boy you might have had a crush on at the time (Gary Elliott) and kiss him - BLAM!! - before streaking and shrieking away to kiss (Gary Elliott) another day!!  Remember the merry go round?  It, too, was built to last through a tornado - I can't believe there weren't more fatalities from bashed in little skulls if you lost your footing, but I don't think we lost anyone!!  See you in September, Paige -

ah yes, the purloined earrings.........however they were PEARL earrings, not merely white, and i got the dickens for it when my mom saw the class picture..............lol......and you are correct katie the equipment WAS deadly........poor gary elliot......what trials that poor lad endured with us.........what was the teacher's name? if i recall i believe she was blonde, and no way Mrs. Davis held a candle to her as a 'hottie'..........
I believe that picture exists somewhere.......a new mission for me!!!!!!!

Hi Paige - I was wondering where you were. My parents also live in Stuart, in the community called Conquistador. As for the 'Little Red School House' aka West Hills School I too went there but do NOT have the terrific memory that you and Katie possess. The photo that you want to see is already posted. It is in the 'looking back' section, your class is on page 5, view #220 sent in by Artie Apuzzo, I can not see 'the pearls' but is that you sitiing in the left rear of the photo, I can not tell if that is Katie next to you,but do see Gary. If you go to pg. 4 same section view 156 is my classs I have listed those I remember.
Hope you can make the reunion, write me on my email if you would like to catch up some more.

Hey Kath - Hello! that wasn't the pic KT was speaking of...the pic she is referring to has us all lined up against the board......... could it have been a kindergarten picture? I know it still existed after my fire, but when we moved to Florida, my oldest daughter took a whole bunch of pictures without telling me....they are with her in Stonington, CT........she apparently inherited my PURLOINING gene.....i am going to ask her too pull those out and look for me.

Good grief, the plot sickens... I SEE that photo, thank you for pointing it out - but I agree that it isn't the one I'm remembering... Paige, are we having a simultaneous memory warp?!?  You MIGHT have white earrings on in that photo - they may have seemed bigger and more gaudy and fabulous when I saw them on you there in grade school... But I can identify a LOT of the kids in that photo!  Jerry Petry, Timmy Brown, Paige, Carol Gleusner I think, Jody Cavalier, GARY ELLIOTT (swoon), JANIS GATTY who was THE most adorable thing in braids, Nancy Auletto, and up front and a bit to the left (hm, kind of like I am today), Katie Fahnestock and lifelong friend Lavinia Simons... I think I see Eileen Nolan in there, too - and I recognize the FACES of a few more, but am temporarily wrung dry of names... Still.  Paige.  Might this be the photo we are thinking of?!?!?!

OKAY ALREADY!!!!!  KT the picture we are remembering DOES exist, and now that i am thinking of it.....the earrings were not white, they were 'gold'....that's how i figured i'd fib my way outta it .....i told my mom they were buttons on the vest of the kid behind me......we were lined up and standing (or sitting) in front of a wall or the chalkboard......that was my first BIG LIE......those darn earrings........ at any rate, no KT the picture we remember does exist........either buried somewhere here, or in the purloined pictures at my daughter Erin's house.....as i said, i have a new mission......

to be continued......................................

You gals are too funny. I went to that Little Red School house- West Hills, also. I only went for one year- First grade. Kindergarten was at Oakwood Elementary then First at the Red House, then back to Oakwood for Second grade. For the rest of my elementary education I was at St. Hugh's down in the Station. I wonder why I was shuffled around the first 3 years. I remember the schoolhouse fondly, though I cannot remember my teachers name, which I odd because I practically remember birth. Ha. I do remember Miss Stellwagon was my 2nd grade teacher.  But I do remember the schoolyard equipment. My favorite was the round steel thingy that was propelled by our feet and went spinning around as we held on to the bars. Lordy how dangerous was that. If one of us let go we'd go flying off into the pebbles and dirt ground. Glad my kids weren't there.  I have to go back and look at the picture someone said is here. I'm sure I'll get a few good laughs from that. This is so much fun. All this reminiscing is good for the soul.

Mary Lou, I did that crazy changing of the schools thing, too!  I was in Ms. Sparr or Ms. Starr's class for kindergarten at Oakwood School, then 1st grade at least in that little red schoolhouse (West Hills), then I may have gone back to Oakwood for a few years, and then I ended up from at least 3rd grade onward, with Ms. Davis, and was there a Ms. Ludgate, and then Mr. Jay for 5th and Mr. Lee for 6th.  I think us baby boomers were coming through with our enormous size (though I hear the class after us was even enormous-er), and they were probably expanding schools as quickly as they could...

KT, in case you didn't know, baby boomers were boomers because of their NUMBERS not their SIZE!!!!!!!!!!!  They didn't EXPAND the schools, they just built MORE of them to accomodate us.........lol

Here's another attendee, just for 1st grade, in the Little Red School House (aka the orignal West HIlls School, before the newer one got built).  Teacher was the dragon Ms. Reinecke - shudder (still!)  Second grade got geographically surreal, with 1st week in some temporary quarters in Silas Wood, then moving all our desks & whatnot one morning over to Oakwood, and then showing up after Christmas holidays at the brand-new West Hills edifice  -  what a wild year, and all with dear (major ugh) Miss Barrie...Love the grade school photos!

Forgive me for entering a conversation that took place a year ago! But I'm new to this site and am so excited about this discussion of the one room school house. I went there for 1st grade (1956-1957)!!! Anyone remember me? Where can I find the photo that you have posted somewhere? Actually, I was on the cover of the back to school issue of the JC Penney catalogue and the photo was a picture of me in front of the one room school house! Would love to hear from my 1st grade classmates!!!

Page 7, 'Looking Back' section - it's named Artie Apuzzo's something-something... I THINK that is the one you need!

Ellen, I don't remember much from that time, but I hope you will be able to pinpointyourself in the photo (IF it's the right photo) - I do have weird fuzzy memories of several of the people in the photo where I know their faces very well, but couldn't name them in a million years.  I bet one of them is you?!  Yes, interest in our website is ebbing a bit as people have returned to real present times.  I worried a bit about it at first, because all contacts were kind of at a fever pitch for the year or 2 prior to the reunion, and then dropped off precipitously.  But upon reflection, I understand that this is a perfectly healthy cycle - and that it will definitely ramp up again as we near our 45th reunion.  So glad to have heard from you & I look forward to seeing if the photo from Artie Apuzzo is the one you need!  Katie K.

Yes, I remember that school house on Jericho Tnpk, too.  I was just looking at my first grade picture taken there just this morning! I had Mrs. Beule.  I have the picture and many of us went from there all the way through to WWHS together.  Wonderful wasn't it.  IF I knew how to use my scanner, I would post that picture, too.

HaH, Katie,
I remember almost all of the students in my 1st grade picture!  Surprisingly.  There are 24 kids in the picture.  They are, in case anyone wants a copy of their picture:  -, Jay, Timmy, Bobby, Steven Henry, Carl, Larry, Wayne, - , Randy Scott, Gary Sweat, Bobby Greco, Elizabeth, Elizabeth Taylor, [not the famous one], - , Betty with red hair, Teresa, Teresa Matarazzo, Me, Laura, - , Jeannie Kane with the brace on her leg from Polio, -, Linda?.  The blanks are faces I can't remember the names for but recognize still.  I may be able to update this list when the mind clears later. dh

Katie,
Do you know that I was in Mrs. Spahr's kindergarten class, I think, in Oakwood, too?  I was sent from Oakwood to The West Hills little schoolhouse, then Oakwood again and on to Birchwood and then Central before I went to Memorial JHS.

We were all shuffled around so much, baby-booming as we were. During kindergarten I went to Maplewood, Oakwood and one other one... I think it started  with a C.. or maybe it was Birchwood... forgive my sketchy memory, I was only 5.
I went on to 4 lovely years at St. Hugh's...don't get me started. Then on to Beverly Hills. Mike Levrini and I sat next to each other and giggled our way though 5th grade... his laugh was infectious. Mr. Z's class, 6th grade was great!!! The Washington trip...
MONUMENTAL!

Fun to remenber...

I did not attend school there but when I moved to Hunt> Sta. in 1959 it was the South Huntington District Office.  I attended the West Hills Methodist Church and it was till in Jericho in those days and they let us use it for our Sunday School Classes. we would have 100 kids cross Jericho and go to class.
